Beechworth and surrounding area

If you are thinking of travelling to north-east Victoria, Beechworth is a great place to base yourself. We are centrally located and there is lots to do. Some suggested itineraries are:

3 Day Stay - discover Beechworth
  • Day 1 - arrive, relax, wander around the fabulous retail precinct of Beechworth. Settle into 1860, dine out at one of many great restaurants.
  • Day 2 - book into a historic walking tour of Beechworth. These last for around an hour and bookings need to be made at the Visitors Information Centre. Other alternatives are visiting the Old Beechworth Goal, a walk around the gorge (takes around 1.5 hours) or visiting the Burke Museum. If food & wine is your thing, enjoy a beer tasting at Bridge Rd Brewery, visiting Pennyweight or Sorrenberg wineries or borrowing the Town Bike (free to hire) from Bridge Rd Brewery & cycling around town.
  • Day 3 - book into the Spa at Beechworth for one of their amazing treatments so that you leave town relaxed.

Day trips from Beechworth

King Valley
The King Valley wine region is approximately 1.5 hours drive from Beechworth. It is a beautiful drive passing through Milawa (try Brown Brothers for lunch - about 25 minutes from Beechworth & visit the Milawa Cheese Factory) and continue on up the valley floor to Pizzini, Dal Zotto, Chrismont and the many other wineries in the region. The Mountain View Hotel is another good place for lunch.

Mt Buffalo
It will take around 1 hour & 20 minutes to reach the top of Mt Buffalo. On the way go through Myrtleford & visit Red Ramia for a surprising range of fantastic Middle Eastern, Chinese & Moroccan antiques, curios and treasures. Red Ramia (that's the owners name) travels extensively and imports directly to his shop in Myrtleford. You can find items that are twice the price in capital cities. They also have a cafe called Cafe Fez serving baklava and middle eastern foods.

Mt Buffalo is beautiful place with majestic rock formations, Lake Catani for a refreshing mountain swim, walking tracks to the Horn (a rocky outcrop with sensational views) and fabulous flora & fauna. In winter you will need chains (can be hired at Ray's in Mrytleford on the way) but there is usually enough snow for really great tobogganing and cross country skiing. There are no ski lifts and it is a pristine place for snow play.

You need a full day to explore and enjoy the day.
